Nic Phillips graduated from Louisiana State University (LSU) with a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy in 2024. During her time at LSU, she centered her studies on women’s history, developing a deep interest in the intersections of femininity, religion, and self-expression, which culminated in her senior thesis, “Girlhood Online: Catholicism, Suffering, and Femininity on Social Media.” Post-graduation, she worked alongside her professor Lauren Griffin to write a shortened rendition of her work, “The Coquette Catholic Trend,” which was published by the Center for Religion and Media at NYU’s The Revealer.

Alongside her studies, Nic discovered her passion for survivor advocacy through her participation in on-campus organizations. She served as an officer for Feminist in Action (FIA) and Tigers Against Sexual Assault (TASA). These student organizations promote feminism and survivor advocacy both on campus and in the greater Baton Rouge community. In addition to these roles, Nic worked as a Specialty DJ and Promotions Director for KLSU, and as the Vice President of Diversity for Pi Beta Phi. Her proudest accomplishment when working with these organizations was organizing the first annual Denim Day benefit show at LSU’s Greek Amphitheater. This event combined the vibrant local music scene with survivor advocacy to raise funding for STAR.

Nic continued her advocacy after graduation, focusing on grassroots organizing and creative forms of resistance. She has combined her passion for advocacy with her love for music through her involvement with the riot grrrl punk scene and by self-publishing a zine focused on the politics of local alternative music subcultures. In her activism, Nic primarily focuses on empowering women to take up space, normalizing conversations about sexual violence on the local level, and creating safe communities for survivors.

In Nic’s free time, they enjoy reading gothic literature and nonfiction, playing music, collecting dolls and VHS tapes, attending local shows with their friends, anything fashion-related, fostering their knowledge on all things riot grrrl, and spending time with their cats Hachi and Lenore.
