DESCRIPTION:Dynamics of Sexual Violence is an interactive training that builds empathy for survivors of sexual violence\, informs about the dynamics and impacts of sexual violence\, equips participants to support and advocate for survivors when the need arises. This workshop is facilitated by Angela Golden. \nAs a result of this workshop\, participants will be better able to:\n–Identify short and long-term impacts of sexual violence\n–Recognize barriers to survivors reporting or disclosing their assaults\n–Empathize with survivors of sexual violence\n–Recognize community causes of sexual violence\n–Analyze power dynamics in scenarios of sexual violence\n–Identify responses to sexual violence that empower survivors \nThis event is open to the public. General admission cost is $35.00. Continuing education for counselors and social workers are available; early bird registration (by 5/10) is $55.00 and registration beginning 5/11 is $65.00. \nThis program is approved for 3.0 General contact hours for social workers by Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response as authorized by the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners. This program has been approved for 3.0 General contact hours for counselors. Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider\, ACEP No. 6971. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. STAR is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.

DESCRIPTION:We know that parents need healing too. They have a variety of reactions and feelings upon finding out that a child they love has been sexually abused.  Many of the ways they have coped in the past may not be helping them in this situation and many times the complex situations related to sexual abuse will decrease support persons and resources available to them. Helping parents\, who are secondary survivors\, can help the parent in their healing process and help them better provide support and care for their child. \nThe group will run for 8 consecutive weeks on Thursday evenings beginning at 5:30 p.m. It will be hosted at STAR’s office\, located at 1412 Peterman Drive\, Suite A\, Alexandria\, LA 71301. The group will work to build rapport with one another to establish a source of support and healing. As this is a therapeutic group\, the group rules will be addressed in group meetings to meet the needs of the parents in the group. \nThose interested in enrolling in the group can contact the STAR office at (318) 625-7592. A group assessment will be required prior to attendance at the group.

A personal action kit and additional information about the Start By Believing campaign can be downloaded here. \nThis campaign is important because survivors often feel afraid to disclose their assault or report to police for fear that they will not be believed. \n“It takes a brave person to share what I believe is one of the most traumatic experiences that can happen in a person’s life. Believe them\, believe in them.” – Tonja \n  \n“When I finally started telling people I trusted that I had been raped\, they often wouldn’t talk back\, or they would immediately change the subject\, or leave\, or would continuously talk over me until I was silent. When I finally told the police that I had been raped\, they said they weren’t going to prosecute the rapist because he had been dating me. Simply believing is important\, but isn’t enough by itself. What can you do?\n-Listen.\n-Believe.\n-React.I was highly encouraged to be silent about having been raped\, in order to make other people more comfortable. I was encouraged to suffer on my own so that other people’s lives would be more convenient.
