SUMMARY:Building a Better Connection Summit - Baton Rouge
DESCRIPTION:  \nHealthy family and community bonds are key to preventing and healing from trauma\, and enable youth and adults to be resilient when going through difficult situations. It is required that adults participate in the summit along with their teen. Parents are invited to register themselves\, their partner and up to 3 teens. Spots are limited and pre-registration is required. Please use the link below to register now. \n \nRequirements for Participation\n\nTeens must be accompanied by an adult/legal guardian. Teens must be entering/enrolled in 9th – 12th grade for the 2019-2020 school year.\nParents and teens must attend all sessions as designated and stay for entire event to receive entry into the Door Prize drawing.\nParents cannot “drop teens off” and “pick them up” at a later time.\nBy participating in the Building a Better Connection Summit\, you consent to interview(s)\, photography\, audio recording\, video recording and its/their release\, publication\, exhibition\, or reproduction of you and your child’s likeness to be used for news\, web casts\, promotional purposes\, telecasts\, advertising\, inclusion on websites\, social media\, or any other purpose by ReCAST\, STAR and its affiliates and representatives. In this session\, parents will participate in an in-depth\, lecture-style presentation introducing the neuroscience of early adversity\, the ACE Study and community response to addressing ACEs. \nTeens Breakout Session # 1\nDating 101\nEach person has a unique understanding of what a relationship is supposed to look like; however\, everyone can agree that healthy relationships involve key components to be successful. In this session\, teens will discuss dating violence\, learn to recognize red flags and have a greater understanding of what it means to have a healthy relationship. \nParents Breakout Session # 2\nBrain Architecture Game\nToxic stress can affect brain interaction with body systems leading to disease\, disability and social/relational problems throughout life. However\, the developing brain is sensitive to all kinds of experience\, so childhood is also a window of opportunity for building resilience. In this session\, parents will participate in an interactive discussion and work together to build “brains” out of everyday materials\, using the principles discussed in Session 1. \nTeens Breakout Session # 2\nConsent 101\nConsent is a component of healthy relationships and having basic knowledge of consent can help to reduce instances of sexual harassment and assault. In this session\, teens will learn the definition and age of consent in Louisiana\, discuss the impacts of sexual assault\, and explore solutions to this issue. \nWhole Group Session – Parents and Teens\nFamily Connection and Self-Care: You Can’t Pour from an Empty Cup\nFamily bonds are important to our health and happiness. At the same time\, in order to show up for others we need to take care of ourselves\, too. In this session\, participants will discuss ways to incorporate self-care into their lives as individuals and identify ways family members can support each other in taking care of themselves.

SUMMARY:Support Group for Parents - Alexandria
DESCRIPTION:We know that parents need healing too. They have a variety of reactions and feelings upon finding out that a child they love has been sexually abused.  Many of the ways they have coped in the past may not be helping them in this situation and many times the complex situations related to sexual abuse will decrease support persons and resources available to them. Helping parents\, who are secondary survivors\, can help the parent in their healing process and help them better provide support and care for their child. \nThe group will run for 8 consecutive weeks on Thursday evenings beginning at 5:30 p.m. It will be hosted at STAR’s office\, located at 1412 Peterman Drive\, Suite A\, Alexandria\, LA 71301. The group will work to build rapport with one another to establish a source of support and healing. As this is a therapeutic group\, the group rules will be addressed in group meetings to meet the needs of the parents in the group. \nThose interested in enrolling in the group can contact the STAR office at (318) 625-7592. A group assessment will be required prior to attendance at the group.
