SUMMARY:Safe Dating Habits for Teens - Session 2
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to stop and prevent dating violence\, victimization\, and perpetration\, including physical and sexual abuse that may occur between youth in a dating relationship. \nIn recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month\, the New Orleans Public Library has partnered with STAR to provide education about sexual and dating violence throughout April. \nAbout the Series: This combined discussion and independent-viewing program for middle and high school students is presented by Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response (STAR)\, a nonprofit organization committed to serving youth and adult survivors of sexual trauma and building institutional capacity to prevent and respond responsibly to sexual violence in the community. \nSession Descriptions: \n\nApril 1: This live session provides an introduction to Safe Dates\, including what the program covers and how to sign up for the virtual training program. There will also be an introduction to STAR New Orleans and an overview of STAR’s services\, as well as the mandated reporting requirements for STAR staff.\nApril 15: This live session will be a recap of the topics covered in the first three virtual sessions: ‘Defining Caring Relationships and Dating Abuse\,’ ‘Why Do People Abuse\,’ and ‘How to Help Friends.’ This session will also answer any questions that you may have and provide basic support for the training. If you were not able to attend the introductory live session\, that is ok.\nApril 29: The final live session will recap the last three virtual sessions of Safe Dates: ‘Gender Stereotypes and Equal Power Through Communication\,’ ‘How We Feel\, How We Deal\,’ and ‘Preventing Sexual Assault.’ Additionally\, there will be a full recap of the virtual training in close\, answering any questions comments or concerns that you may have\, and reiterating resources that STAR New Orleans offers.\n\nSince 2014\, all public high schools in Louisiana are required to provide “appropriate classroom instruction relative to dating violence\,” (Children’s Code in LA R.S. 17:81). However\, STAR’s Community Education Director Angela Golden said many schools do not have the resources available to comply with the mandate\, which is where their organization comes in. \nThe Safe Dates series aligns with the New Orleans Public Library’s vision to be a catalyst for change in New Orleans and to provide equal services and opportunities to all. \nSafe Dates kicks off April 1 at 5:15pm\, followed by live sessions on April 15 and April 29. For details and registration\, visit nolalibrary.org/events. \n

SUMMARY:Start By Believing Day
DESCRIPTION:Start by Believing is a public awareness campaign designed to end the cycle of silence and change the way we respond to sexual assault. It was first launched in April 2011. Since then\, thousands of people across the country have made their own personal commitment to believe and support survivors of sexual violence. There are many ways you can take action. Below is a list of ideas on how to get involved – but don’t stop there! Be creative and use what you know to spread the word. \nSupport survivors: When someone tells you they have been sexually violated\, believe them and remind them that it was not their fault. \nSpeak up: Rape continues to be the most under-reported crime\, with law enforcement estimating that only about 35% of rapes are reported each year. In addition\, many people overestimate the percentage of sexual assault reports that are false. Research shows that about 2-8% of sexual assault reports to law enforcement are false\, far less than many people realize. Challenge these myths when you hear them! \nTake a stand: When you hear people blame a victim for their “role” in the sexual assault\, remind them that we’ve all made choices that decrease our safety. It is not the choice of the victim that matters – it is the decision of someone else to commit a sexual assault. \nStart a conversation: Social media allows you to carry the message farther and faster than ever before. Use your preferred platform to engage a conversation on what it means to #StartbyBelieving.  \nMake it visual: Take a selfie with your pledge and post it on social media. Start by making your own personal commitment to Start by Believing. Click here to download our pledge sign now. \nLearn more at Start by Believing: Ending the Cycle of Silence in Sexual Assault.

SUMMARY:Understanding Human Trafficking Training - VIRTUAL
DESCRIPTION:STAR is hosting a FREE virtual training to combat human trafficking on Friday\, January 22nd from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. This 2-hour training is designed to be an educational piece for individuals without prior knowledge of human trafficking/commercial sexual exploitation. As a result of this training\, participants will develop a basic understanding of human trafficking and sexual exploitation and learn about safety planning with youth and resources available to support youth. \n \n \nThis training was created by Love146\, an international human rights organization working to end child trafficking and exploitation through survivor care and prevention. The trafficking and exploitation of children is one of the darkest stories and most severe human rights abuses imaginable. But for us\, the hope of ending it is a reality. Love146 is helping grow the movement to end child trafficking while providing effective\, thoughtful solutions.

SUMMARY:Start By Believing Day 2020
DESCRIPTION:Start By Believing Day is Wednesday\, April 1st\, and it provides an opportunity for communities across the country\, and around the world\, to unify with one meaningful message for survivors of sexual assault: We hear you and we are here to help you. \nDuring the month of April\, we encourage our communities to help raise awareness of sexual violence by taking the #StartByBelieving Pledge! A personal action kit and additional information about the Start By Believing campaign can be downloaded here. \nThis campaign is important because survivors often feel afraid to disclose their assault or report to police for fear that they will not be believed. On this day\, and every day\, we seek to end the cycle of silence and change the way we respond to sexual assault\, by choosing to Start by Believing. \nOn Wednesday\, April 1st\, add your voice to the #StartByBelieving campaign by posting a statement of support for survivors via a photo and/or video on Facebook\, Twitter\, Instagram and tag STAR @staradvocates. Download the Start By Believing Pledge sign here. \nSTAR also has a number of events scheduled for the month of April to honor Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Learn more at www.star.ngo/events.
