DESCRIPTION:Start by Believing is a public awareness campaign designed to end the cycle of silence and change the way we respond to sexual assault. It was first launched in April 2011. Since then\, thousands of people across the country have made their own personal commitment to believe and support survivors of sexual violence. There are many ways you can take action. Below is a list of ideas on how to get involved – but don’t stop there! Be creative and use what you know to spread the word. \nSupport survivors: When someone tells you they have been sexually violated\, believe them and remind them that it was not their fault. \nSpeak up: Rape continues to be the most under-reported crime\, with law enforcement estimating that only about 35% of rapes are reported each year. In addition\, many people overestimate the percentage of sexual assault reports that are false. Research shows that about 2-8% of sexual assault reports to law enforcement are false\, far less than many people realize. Challenge these myths when you hear them! \nTake a stand: When you hear people blame a victim for their “role” in the sexual assault\, remind them that we’ve all made choices that decrease our safety. It is not the choice of the victim that matters – it is the decision of someone else to commit a sexual assault. \nStart a conversation: Social media allows you to carry the message farther and faster than ever before. Their mission is to educate\, advocate and provide valuable resources to the many women of our community who have or currently are struggling in abusive relationships. Although these relationships can be physical in nature\, there are so many caveats of domestic violence such as: mental\, emotional\, verbal\, and financial. These relationships can even include the more recent behaviors that are finally being brought to the forefront–narcissistic and toxic behaviors. All these behaviors can cause a combination of health issues and mental distress for women. Therefore\, the need to educate women on all these forms of abuse is more prevalent than ever. This new event is the culmination of this mission to reach and teach women from all walks of life experiencing these types of situations. \nClick here to reserve your spot.

SUMMARY:3rd Annual Survivors of Violence Lobby Day
DESCRIPTION:Calling all survivors of interpersonal and systemic violence\, victims’ loved ones\, criminalized survivors\, allies\, advocates\, and supporters to the State Capitol in Baton Rouge from 9 am-4 pm on Tuesday\, April 25th! Survivors from across the state are coming together to make our voices heard during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and the legislative session. We will hear from advocacy and service organizations\, speak with the legislators about our priorities\, and build fellowship and community with each other. \nWe know what changes need to happen in Louisiana to build safe communities and support healing. No one needs to identify themselves as a survivor or share more than they want to participate! We will provide resources and training to folks on how the legislative process works\, questions to ask legislators\, advocacy talking points\, and grounding/self-care techniques for ourselves. An advocacy training is scheduled via zoom on Sunday April 2nd from 5-7 pm. \nFood will be provided and transportation is available.
